Local netball teams did not disappoint on home soil against teams coming from neigbouring towns of Kagiso, Bekkersdal, Khutsong and Munsieville during the recent West Rand Netball Tournament, hosted by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Art, Culture and Recreation.

Little Angels, coached by Moipone Mangope, were a marvel to watch in the games that lead to the fianls where they took on Valencia from Bekkersdal in the under 13 match.

Little Angels captain and goal shooter Lebo Mokobane lead by example as she was instrumental to lead her team to a 7-2 victory against Valencia.

The Mohlakeng Open Team also made it a point that the first prize stay home when they beat Munsieville in the finals with a score of 17-13.

Tournament coordinator Mushi Mogapi said that the netball jamboree clearly demonstrated the need for more such events.

“This is one way to reduce social ills and to revive the game of netball at development level,” says Mushi.

“It is vital that such tournaments be played at least twice a month or even on a weekly basis.

“This can only be possible if sponsors can come on board from either the local municipalities or the local business.

“The Department at least lead by example.”

There was a also an all-men team from Mohlakeng, comprising mostly of officials, umpires, coaches and referees, who made use of the game to demonstrate that netball need not be dominated only by women.
