Morgenrood wins again

Local racing legend, Ben Morgenrood, wins his fourth Sports and GT challange.

With the exceptional display of racing in the 2013 Sports and GT Racing Challenge, Ben Morgenrood clinched his fourth season victory with one more race to go.

According to this local racing legend, he already won the season during their previous race in Cape Town on 5 October.

However, Morgenrood was determined to end this season with a bang during their last race of the season at Kyalami race track on 2 November.

After qualifying in pole position once again, things looked great for Morgenrood, but with Franco Di Matteo breathing down his neck the battle for first place was far from over.

Morgenrood ended his first race in second place with Di Matteo in first.

“It was a great race and Di Matteo deserved the win,” says Morgenrood.

He adds that it was also a great race for Randfontein as second, third and fourth place went to Randfontein drivers. These drivers were Morgenrood, Roelf du Plessis and Mackie Adlem.

Steve Smith, who is also a Randfontein resident finished in the overall second place in the GT2 category.

Although Morgenrood did not take the victory at Kyalami, he still won the 2013 Sports and GT Series.

With his fourth season victory in the bag, Morgenrood now matches Hennie Groenewald’s season victory record and explains that he is already preparing himself to take the victory again in 2014, which will make him the new record holder for most season victories.

He adds that during the 2013 season he took pole position in all his races and, aside from Kyalami, he won all the opening races at every circuit they competed at.

“During every race weekend we race in two heats. During the first heat of the past eight races I took the win, and in the second heat, where the grid is inverted, I always finished the race in the points,” says Morgenrood.

This was the case during his visit to Kyalami as well. After starting the race in 7th on the grid, Morgenrood finished his second Race of the day in a well deserved third place

With a 42 points lead over Rui Campos, who is in the overall second place, Morgenrood showed that he is still the best on the track and explains that his season victory is all thanks to a great team and his trusty 2013 V8 Ford Mustang.

“All the Randfontein racers did extremely well during our visit to Kyalami. I feel that it is a great achievement for Randfontein to take up four of the positions on the grid during this event,” says Morgenrood.

Morgenrood thanks his team who assisted him during every race and made sure that he brings the Mustang home safely.

This dream team consists of Roger Tayler – head engineer, Peet Swanepoel and Danie Blignaut.

“Although there were times that we had some close calls, my team and I always managed to finish every race.

For me that is a good season and definitely a contributing factor to my fourth season victory,” says Morgenrood.
