Westonaria to host cross country league

Race 6 of the CGA Cross Country League will be held in Westonaria on 13 July.

After a long absence cross country athletics action will once again come to the West Rand.
Westonaria has been charged with hosting the 6th race of the Central Gauteng Cross Country League at the Westonaria Sports Complex on 13 July.

The Zuurbekom-based Protea Guineas Athletics Club will play the role of host club for the event.
Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Cross Country Commision chairperson Steve Khanyile told the Herald that it is indeed a pleasure to bring events of this kind to the West Rand.

“A couple of years ago we hosted several provincial championships at Westonaria,” says Khanyile.

“The West Rand is no stranger to hosting cross country championships and even in the 80’s Randfontein’s Riebeeck Lake used to host the Kenny Jacobs Memorial Cross Country challenge.

“It is a pleasure for us to host an event of this kind.

“Since we had an opportunity to learn with last year’s Pick n Pay Junior Road Running Challenge at Zuurbekom Primary School, we are ready with all the race logistics,” says Protea Guineas chairperson Abram Tshivhase.

Local athletes and clubs will be given an opportunity to shine on home ground.

Leading the charge of West Rand based athletes is World Championships favourite Sibusiso Nzima, SA Marathon Champion Cornelia Joubert, CGA Junior Athlete of the Year Lizzerie Ferriera, local veteran Butiki Jantjies, andVuyisile Choba and Lebogang Masilo from Simunye, who both run for the Pretoria based Transnet Athletics Club.

Mohlakeng athlete, Vincent Kutuane, a veteran of many international events, will also take place.
