LETTER: Do the coronavirus regulations apply in Randgate?

If someone could help us with these issues, we would appreciate it.

Since the coronavirus made its appearance in this country of ours I have noticed that Randgate, specifically in the library area, is excluded from Covid-19 regulations.

People can gather in groups, not wear masks, not adhere to any social distancing, drink in public (all day, every day of the week) and braai. Whatever they use will be left there – all the rubbish, beer bottles and boxes. The area looks like a small Vilakazi Street mixed with a dumping site.

An oak tree that has been there for over 50 years has become the local toilet. This tree is split in two and when the people are finished braaiing, they throw the hot coals where the tree is split. The Fire Brigade was called out a couple of times to put out the fire. What they don’t think of is if this tree should fall, it could damage the electrical wires (telephone poles), neighbouring walls etc.

Police were called out numerous times to address this issue but nothing was done. No arrests of people not adhering to the Covid-19 regulations?

The President clearly said, “It’s a criminal offence if you are not wearing your mask and if you are drinking in public”. Speaking to them isn’t going to help!

From as early as around 07:30 people will start to gather. Sometimes around ten cars are parked in the parking area, with people playing loud music, drinking, partying and going on. This will go on till 21:00. Those in the neighbouring houses don’t have peace and quiet anymore, and they don’t dare ask them to turn down the music.

This is why some people are taking matters into their own hands! Do they want us to move out of the area or like most people are doing now, emigrate?

Emails and telephone calls have been made to the mayor’s office, Traffic Department and Department of Health, but all in vain. We live in fear every day. If someone could help us with these issues, we would appreciate it.
