The community cannot afford to lose this SPCA

Janette Muller, Rand West SPCA acting chairperson and the society's liaison officer writes:

The Rand West SPCA (Randfontein and Westonaria) has been protecting animals for decades and is now at a stage where it faces closure.

For three years, the NSPCA has been involved in the running of this SPCA, but this is no longer sustainable – the SPCA needs a local committee that can take over the running of this SPCA and ensure its growth in the community.

The SPCA has asked on several occasions for animal-loving and business-minded people to take ownership of this SPCA, to no avail. The SPCA belongs to the community of Randfontein and Westonaria, and the public is desperately encouraged to come forward and ensure the survival of this necessary SPCA.

The Society takes in thousands of abandoned, abused and unwanted animals every year and attends to an average of 40 cruelty complaints every month. We also assist in the impoverished areas with education and basic animal needs, therefore the community cannot afford to lose this SPCA. Unless members of the public with the necessary skills and commitment come forward to serve on the committee, the society will have to close its doors.

This is not a threat but a reality. The members must be from Randfontein or Westonaria. If you would like to save this SPCA, please email a one-page CV to chairman@spcarandwest.co.za.
