Freedom?

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit

On Friday, the first of May, South Africans were allowed to exercise. A small bit of personal freedom.

Most didn’t grab the opportunity but those who did, enjoyed their freedom. Individuals, couples, families were running, jogging, walking and cycling.

Just getting out, seeing other people was amazing.Yes, we are all different; introverts and extroverts, socialites and hermits. But we all have this one thing in common – we need each other.

From the beginning God created Adam and Eve. Then he created the family unit. Most of us are a part of a unit of family, friends. But not all of us are free. Being able to go out of your house or property is not true freedom.

The Bible mentions the words ‘free’, freed’ and ‘freedom’, many times. In fact, this old, dusty book, the Bible, has a verse especially for 2020 corona. Psalm 119:45, “I will walk in freedom”. Throughout history millions of people have died for freedom. In the future, millions will die for the cause of personal freedom. But the question remains, are we free? John 8:32, “And the truth shall set you free”.

An eagle in captivity may have all its needs met, but it is not free. Are you really free?
