All in the same boat

Pastor Gerrit Mes from the pulpit

Isn’t it amazing how this corona pandemic has affected all of our lives, rich and poor, young and old, employers and employees.

It is so true, we are all in the same boat. As I thought about this from different angles, I realised how true it is. We are all in the same boat. But how you and I experience the five weeks of lockdown may vary. In the same boat, but in different classes of compartments.

Some of us are held up in compartments well stocked with food, drink and entertainment. It is a luxury compartment. Others are in compartments with no food, running water or sanitation. But we are all in the same boat. If the boat sinks, we all lose everything.

Today some of us may need God more than others, but tomorrow all that may change. As quickly as this pandemic hit us, it may be over. We don’t know the future. In my own heart, I am more aware today than ever of how blessed I am, and I am more aware of how difficult it must be for others.

It is in this context that what I get out of the Bible changes completely. My instinct is to say to God, thank you for my blessings and to pray for those less privileged. I am reminded of the Bible words that, “I am my brother’s keeper”. I am challenged by God’s Word that says, actions speak louder than words. We are all in the same boat, so I plead with you, don’t forget those less privileged than you. We are all God’s children.
