The sinkhole in Westonaria is no surprise.

I remember in 1976, or so, a friend had to vacate a house in west Westonaria because of a nearby sinkhole.

Around that time the main road from Westonaria towards West Driefontein was diverted because a whole crushing plant had fallen into a sinkhole. There is still a loop in the road around the area.

The whole area is dolomitic and mine dewatering makes those areas susceptible to sinkholes.

In the near past, a sinkhole was filled where the N14 zig-zags at the R563 in Krugersdorp near the new Engen Garage.

It isn’t something new and it is not surprising. People should be aware of this. Report any new cracks in walls, etc, to local municipalities. They have engineers who should be able to advise residents.
