‘Terror was no ordinary legend’

May his soul rest in revolutionary perfect peace.

EFF West Rand deepens its revolutionary red banner in mourning the passing away of the fighter and former boxing champion of the world, Peter ‘Terror’ Mathebula.

Terror, the first black South African to win a world boxing title has died at the age of 68. Mathebula made history in 1980 when he beat fellow flyweight Tae-Shik Kim of South Korea in the World Boxing Association title fight in Los Angels, United States of America.

His fearsome skills and bravery inside the ring earned him the nickname Terror. He represented the African Black excellence and from the heydays, he changed the attitude towards African fighters that Africa can conquer the world, regardless of white supremacy.

He is no ordinary legend; he was an international legend. His experience and knowledge in boxing were never utilised to the fullest in order to produce and develop more boxers on the West Rand.

He frequently said while hobnobbing and imbibing at Mohlakeng Hostel that, ‘Boxing Academy is needed here in Randfontein to produce another Terror but this government does not care, in particular this municipality of Rand West. They are happy to see us lingering on the streets’.

His abundant boxing skills are in heaven after he was denied an opportunity to plough them back into the community by providing him with the necessary resources.

We extend our sincere and deepest condolences to his family and indeed to the sports-loving people of his township Mohlakeng, the West Rand, South Africa and the world.

May his soul rest in revolutionary perfect peace.
