We must take a stand

Things are looking so bad at the moment, it feels like there's no government, no law enforcement, and we are all alone in this miserable place.

They say I might step on toes and upset the wrong people with the following …

If they did what they were supposed to in the first place, no one would have to raise the red flag. Only the oppressors, the guilty and the greedy will be offended by the concerns I raise. Genuine honest leaders and public servants will look at it as picking what to do and what not to do from the suggestion box.

If the citizens don’t let their voices be heard, the council/ government will think we are satisfied with what is happening in our communities and country. In fact, things are looking so bad at the moment, it feels like there’s no government, no law enforcement, and we are all alone in this miserable place.

We must take a stand and point out our demands, needs and concerns. What better way to express ourselves than in our local newspaper. We have to give them credit.

I just hope our councillors and major role-players put on their reading classes every now and then. We are disappointed, we are angry; it saddens us so much to see how our hard-earned money goes to waste. I think we should stop paying taxes, but that’s another bad idea, brought forth in anger. Without taxes, the country will surely collapse.

We have to point out wrongdoing, give suggestions and help clean up this filthy town/ country. We have so much potential!

Some take to social media – I’m one of them. I’ve always believed that the right person might read, feel bad and go and correct what’s wrong.

We all know what’s wrong in this country and if we (the citizens) had the money, power and resources, we would fix the roads, pick up the trash, sort out our water and sewage systems. We would organise housing, not just for one area but where it’s most needed. We would deal with crime, substance abuse and gender-based and domestic violence, and child abuse. We’d eradicate poverty by creating employment and training, and alleviate the stress at schools and clinics brought on by overcrowding and incompetence. But we are not in power.

We all know we are not in the driver’s seat, so we have to hold the so-called leaders accountable for lack of, or in some cases no, service delivery. We have to find a outlet for our frustrations and concerns. We need to have a platform. Not all of us believe in breaking down, looting, stealing and destroying what’s in front of us. There’s got to be a better way.

Phoning local council is a dead-end street. You will be send from pillar to post and right back to where you started. People are always in meetings, always busy with something else. Lord knows, that is so frustrating.

We have to keep on complaining and suggesting until the right person’s conscience gets the better of him or her and they start putting in some work.
