Police tips on ‘good lighting outside’ needs clarity

I would like to comment on the Police's reference to 'good lighting' being needed to be safe at home..

Regarding the article Police give tips for staying safe at home, I would like to comment on their reference to ‘good lighting’. This needs clarification.

It does not mean bright lights or searchlights. It means lighting directed into the appropriate places – paths around the house and garage, for example, preferably motion sensitive.

Light should not shine out to bother neighbours, and especially not cause a traffic hazard. The best way to prevent this is to install lights high up and angle their light downwards, where it will be contained within the property, not wasting energy (electricity) or causing a nuisance/ hazard.

Remember one thing – the brighter the light, the darker the shadow. Criminals love shadows and it is difficult for eyes to adapt to the contrast when trying to catch them. A less intense light is more practical, cheaper to run and safer.
