DA calls for reopening op swimming pools

Riebeeck lake swimming pool was once one of the best in Randfontein, however, this pool has been closed for five years because of neglect.

I have submitted a petition to the Public Service Office at 2pm on Friday, 24 November, to ensure the municipality makes municipal pools operational and opens them to the public.

The swimming pool in Toekomsrus has been closed for over 15 years. The ANC council just can’t get the swimming pools to meet operational standards, following two failed contracts and spending over R12 million. It is alleged that another R600 000 is needed to complete the pool.

I visited the site along with a delegation from Parliament in 2015. The recommendation was that this pool be completed in that same year, but this has clearly not happened.

The Finsbury Swimming pool was open last year but due to neglect by the municipality it is now closed, following leakages on the pool floor. This is simply due to lack of maintenance.

As for a pool in Mohlakeng, it has been open since last year but yet again a lack of maintenance caused it be be now closed.

Riebeeck Lake swimming pool was once one of the best in Randfontein, however, this pool has been closed for five years because of neglect. Criminals are using the facility as a hiding place and the municipality has done nothing about it.

Swimming pools are being vandalised instead of being open to the public. With school holidays around the corner, public swimming pools should keep children off the streets and away from social ills.

We call on the Mayor, Mzi Khumalo to see that these swimming pools are opened as a matter of urgency. If it is impossible to open the pools, the DA challenges him to call a public meeting to explain to the public why no swimming pool in Randfontein is open at this stage.
