2018 electricity hike: Spare a thought for us in W’aria

People are far too accepting of such matters.

With reference to From the editor’s desk in the Herald of 7 July 2017 concerning an electricity tariff increase planned for 2018. Spare a thought for the residents of Westonaria who since June 2017 have to deal with a 37 per cent increase in the price of pre-paid electricity.

In May this year R100 bought 102,10 units (up to 51kWh @ 82,53c and more than 51kWh @ 89,34c) while in July, R100 bought 77,60 units (up to 51kWh @ 113,08c and more than 51kWh, oddly also at 113,08).

Each of these was the first or only purchase for the month.

I thought Westonaria and Randfontein Municipalities had merged, but Randfontein stated that electricity will only increase by 1,88 per cent.

Westonaria Municipality will probably tell you they push the price up during winter and then reduce it for summer.

What’s the logic in that, or is it to get us all confused? People are far too accepting of such matters. It’s about time local government was clear and upfront about such practices and start working for the people.

Local government should also show the ratepayer that it’s trying to be more efficient and pass any savings on to the ratepayer, either in visible improvements to the town or reduced rates.

Its a disgrace!
