59 deaths at the hands of Gauteng police

Police officers are not above the law and cannot be allowed to get away with murder.

A shocking report by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has revealed that from 2016 to 2017 there has been a 31 per cent increase in the number of people who have died due to police brutality in Gauteng.

In 2016, 45 deaths were recorded – this number has since risen to 59.

Of the total number of deaths across the country (207), Gauteng is responsible for the highest number of deaths across all provinces, accounting for 29 per cent of this figure. Earlier this year, a study – Victims of Crime – indicated that the public have increasingly lost faith in the police and that there had been a breakdown in trust.

The report by IPID further reinforces the public perception that the police cannot be trusted.

These horrific statistics bear testament to the fact that the police in Gauteng are violating basic human rights while no action is seemingly being taken to curb this trend.

Police officers are not above the law and cannot be allowed to get away with murder.
