R’fontein a town of mystery, magic

Forget Kyalami, just go to the back streets of R'fontein at night.

You ask how we know that we live in Randfontein – that’s easy.

It is a town of mystery and magic, on a scale that would make the teachers at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry scratch their heads in amazement.

The spell takes effect after sunset, when all the magical things start happening. Once the traffic cops are all at home, watching television and eating their pie and boerewors, the whole town changes.

Speed limit signs and stop signs all fall down flat, and all the robots turn to green, so that you can drive at full speed through them from any direction. Both sides of the roads are free to be used, so pick whichever side has the least potholes. People who have been banned from driving are given permission to take to the street, and illegal and unroadworthy vehicles, which dare not put a wheel on the road during the day, are allowed out onto the streets.

There’s quad bikes, dirt bikes, go-karts, cars that are half rebuilt, vehicles that would be turned away from the roadworthy testing grounds, homemade things that defy description, unlicensed motor-bikes with no number plates, no silencers, and no lights, and unfit, unlicensed, and unqualified drivers who are all free to attempt to break the land speed record in or on all sorts of loud and inconsiderate contraptions.

If you like the sound of screaming engines, and squealing tyres, forget Kyalami, go around the back streets of Randfontein at night, but be careful, there’s magic around.

When the sun comes up, and the traffic cops are having their morning coffee, the spell is dissipated and the town returns to its normal state – but at night, when the magic is happening, you will know you are living in Randfontein.
