RHS hosts its annual RACA Eisteddfod

Randfontein High School's RACA Eisteddfod has kicked off and learners from across South Africa are given a platform to showcase their talents.

Randfontein High School (RHS) is celebrating RACA Eisteddfod’s 14th year of existence as learners perform for top place.

According to school spokesperson Rodney Prins, RHS started the RACA Eisteddfod in 2010. This year’s theme is ‘It’s in our blood’ and he explained that this means the learners can explore and bring variations of art to their community and nationally.

Rodney explained that the Eisteddfod consists of almost 7 000 items which learners can participate in. The competition, which has already started, runs until September 1 and usually takes place at RHS. Rodney further stated the participants will also be travelling to 17 outside venues.

The categories that can be participated in, include dancing, speech, drama, vocals, instrumentals, creative works and choir groups.

He added that the newest achievement will be the adjudicated diamond award which is awarded to a special performance that stands out.

The awards for outstanding performances include silver for 70%-79%, gold for 80%-89%, platinum for 90%-94% and diamond for 95%-100%.

“RHS strives to be a trendsetter in motion. When we started we wanted another platform for our learners to participate in other competitions. We started small but this year we have entrants from KZN, Rustenburg, Free State and Cape Town.

“It is a pleasure to see these learners grow. Schools put so much pressure on learners to achieve big awards that they forget there should be a passion for performances and arts. It’s not about getting the highest achievements, but rather the participants giving it their all,” Rodney concluded.
