Phahama – the school of future leaders

Phahama Maths, Science and ICT School of Specialisation is being celebrated for the education of talent.

A clarion call is being made to former learners of Phahama Maths, Science and ICT School of Specialisation to attend the school’s 60th-anniversary celebrations on September 28.

The first high school in Mohlakeng, formerly Phahama Secondary School, was established on October 15, 1964, by the community at Madubulaville Old Location and last year in August, the school was relaunched as a School of Specialisation by the Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane.

In its existence, Phahama was reputable for choral music and thereby won the International Eisteddfod in Roodepoort and went on to win in Holland in 1983.

The school has established a reputation for academic excellence, producing numerous professors, doctors, engineers, and journalists, including Randfontein Herald freelancer and road-running commentator Raymond Moeng, News Room Africa production head Malebo Phage, Radio 702 and Channel Africa producer Thabiso Ntema Boom, engineer Negi Molefe, and well-known funeral undertaker and former Phahama teacher Dr Manyane Diale.

Even the current principal, Sandile Siko, and teachers Linda Diale and Letlhogonolo Moiloa are former learners.

In sports, Phahama has produced Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain Oupa Ace Manyisa, and former Kaizer Chiefs and Free State Stars player Sipho Khuse.

Three former mayors, Zeph Mhlongo, Mzi Khumalo and Mpho Nawa also attended the school.

“We are calling on any former learners to come, and to donate towards the event, which we estimate to have over 600 attendees,” said Vincent Kgaje who is part of the Pioneers who started at the school since it was established.
