RHS wins Gauteng West District D2 public speaking tournament

Out of all the schools taking part in the tournament, RHS was declared the overall winner.

Randfontein High School’s debate team impressed the judges at the Gauteng West District D2 public speaking tournament and walked away with the winning trophy.

The tournament took place on May 7 where learners from numerous West Rand schools debated it out to discover who the champion public speaker is.

Jesse Daniels, coach for RHS’s debate team, explained each group had to speak for a total of 12 minutes – four minutes per speaker. Their topic was ‘Your past is the benchmark for your future’ with a focus on the election year and the last 30 years of democracy.

He mentioned this is the second year they won the trophy. Next, they are preparing for the Gauteng West Moot Court.

Grade Nine learner Zintle Nqambule is part of the winning team for the second year. She stated, “For me, it was a great experience. We learnt a lot from the feedback given by the judges on how to better our public speaking and improve our speech writing.”

Omphemetse Tlhapane, also in Grade Nine added, “It was my first time and it was quite the experience. I would do it again and encourage others to take part as well.”

Jesse noted the feedback from the judges included that each learner spoke eloquently and they were each well prepared.
