RHS grade 12s donate their school uniform

This initiative started many years ago and was initiated by one of the school's former deputy principals.

Matriculants from Randfontein High School spared a thought for the less fortunate and donated their school shoes and uniforms to the school, as they will no longer need them.

This was on December 1 at the school’s premises, when all of the learners were at school to sit for their Afrikaans exam, which is a common paper that requires them to all be present at school.

The Randfontein Herald spoke to the grade head of the class of 2023, Sekai Mukombero, who said that this is essentially them stepping out in style.

“This initiative started many years ago and was initiated by one of the school’s former deputy principals and we have since carried it forward as we are trendsetters at the school. As a result, every other year learners have been requested to donate items and this year we also saw it fit to do the same.

“Learners donated shoes, school pants, school shirts, blazers, jerseys, non-perishable foods, and toiletries among other items. The whole purpose of this is to give back to the community, particularly those children who are from disadvantaged backgrounds who come to our school.

“You’ll find that a certain number of new learners will be without shoes or uniform and we are then able to give back by assisting them,” said Sekai who added that this gives them joy as a school and knowing that they can make a difference where they can.

She added that the school also gives the generic uniform to other school children who are in need whenever they have extra items.

Speaking of the learners, Sekai said that they have outdone themselves this academic year and wish them great things in the future. She also thanked the parents of the learners for allowing the donations to happen in the first place.

Meanwhile, more than 100 pairs of shoes were donated on the day.
