According to Rand West City Libraries programme librarian Thandeka Legae, the event attracted plenty of eager youth to promote the culture of reading.

This competition allowed participants to showcase their talent, build confidence and develop the skills in communicating effectively.

It also offered an opportunity for local authors to market themselves and their books as well as celebrate reading and writing. The learners were also given two books written by our local authors titled Deserted Citizens of the West by Phyllis Malope Mondlane and I am that girl by Nthabiseng Lennon.

ā€œThey also had to do impromptu reading where they were given a paragraph to read on the spot. We also had a spelling bee where learners were given certain words to spell,ā€ said Thandeka, who added they also took part in an interesting debate, to say the least.
