The RandWest SPCA gave some parasite prevention tips for pet owners as it is tick season.

RandWest SPCA manager René van Straten also urged residents to keep in mind the following.

“Allowing your pet to become infested with parasites is not only negligence and poor pet ownership but a contravention of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962. If found guilty of such, you will be held liable for prosecution, such as the owner of the dog in the photos,” she said.

Tips include:

• Consult your veterinarian for the best parasite protection for your pet
• Making use of thick and flea prevention products such as shampoos, powders and/or ‘spot on’, all of which can be bought at any shop selling animal products
• Regular grooming (brushing) to check for fleas and ticks
• Keeping their environment clean. Regularly wash their bedding in parasite-prevention products and add parasite-prevention powders to their dry bedding. Also, keep the grass in the area your pets live in short
