Feeding those who need it

Caring mothers arranged a heritage lunch for the underprivileged residents in their community.

The group AMAQHAWEKAZI hosted a heritage lunch for the underprivileged in their community.

According to chairperson Shirley Boom, the organisation realised that the unemployed families of the area have nothing to eat. Therefore, the group decided to host an event where families could treat themselves to a plate of warm food and clothing.

“We came together as mothers and started this drive by raising funds from our own pockets to offer the underprivileged food and clothing,” Shirley said.

She explained during the event, residents came to find clothing for themselves. The clothing ranged from adult to baby clothes and she mentioned every individual received something. Thereafter the residents received a plate of samp and tripe (Mala Mogudu).

She emphasised the event was successful since they managed to dish out all of the food by the end of the day. She explained the community was very excited to have something like this done for them.

“We want to better the community since we live in it and experience the struggles of those affected by poverty, unemployment and substance abuse – especially our youth. Our main objective is to help the community. When we do these charity events, we want to show the youth that they can do better things with their lives,” Shirley concluded.
