Over 200 animals vaccinated in one day

Spiffs Pet Grooming Parlour offered a day of free rabies vaccinations for the community's pets in Homelake.

The owners of Spiffs Pet Grooming Parlour arranged a Rabies Vaccination Drive recently to create awareness about the importance of vaccinating pets.

Alzu Feeds and No More Tears Animal Rescue joined in on the experience.

According to one of the owners, Juanita Marx, Alzu Feeds shared their knowledge about animal nutrition while No More Tears was their animal rescue centre of choice.

“We wanted to create awareness about the things that the rescue organisation does for the community. They keep stray and abandoned animals off our streets and also find loving homes for the animals,” Juanita said.

No More Tears volunteer Micaela van Deventer.

Lerato Mosagale from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development inoculated about 205 cats and dogs with rabies vaccines as well as deworming agents for free.

“We decided to offer this rabies drive to the community as there is a definite need for immunisation of dogs and cats in our area. Spiffs offers this to the community yearly because we work with pets daily. Therefore we know the importance of vaccinating pets to keep them at optimal health,” Juanita explained.

She stated rabies is a reportable disease which is a vaccine-preventable, zoonotic, viral disease affecting the central nervous system of animals and humans. She added up to 99% of human rabies cases, dogs are responsible for virus transmission.
