Sotho residents share their culture and traditions

The Randfontein Herald caught up with Basotho residents, also known as Sotho speakers, who shared their stories for Heritage Month.

Three residents of Sotho heritage explained their proud traditions recently.

According to Pheelo Sambo, their eating habits include horses, from which they make biltong. They also eat wild cats and corn which they crush and mix with salt and sugar to create a porridge which they then eat as is. They also like to braai pumpkin seed which they call Sphatlho.

Rachel Moshoeshoe added, “I am proud to be a Sotho woman. Wearing our traditional clothes is what the culture is all about.”

She noted their clothes include a Shweshwe dress, a Modianyeho Basotho hat and Lesolanka blanket.

Nteteleng Lebenya noted their traditions include initiations for boys and girls who go to the mountains. There are also certain procedures for women who are to be married including the paying of lobola.

She stated she is extremely proud of how everything in their culture is transparent and there are no secrets whatsoever.
