Vehicles ‘fly’ into properties at Randgate intersection of chaos

Driver behaviour and stop signs are a serious concern following a major crash at the intersection of Sauer and Tudhope Street.

Driver behaviour is of major concern at the Sauer and Tudhope Street intersection in Randgate. This after a motorist crashed through a resident’s yard and another motorist crashed into a property on the opposite side.

Dottie van Vuuren explained a crash occurred last month involving two vehicles. She noted she was in the living room when she heard a loud noise. One of the vehicles went through the front wall around her yard and if it was not for a small tree, she believed the vehicle would have crashed into her house. She noted the other vehicle crashed into the fence of the boxing club, damaging it.

Lambert Vos, one of the drivers involved in the crash, explained the driver of the other vehicle (who was driving along Sauer Street) simply did not stop at the stop sign. The two then collided forcing Vos through Van Vuuren’s wall.

Van Vuuren noted the stop signs in the area are a reason for immense concern. She too has also been involved in a crash at that intersection. She continued that on Friday evenings and over weekends, the road becomes a metaphorical racetrack with vehicles speeding up and down. She added the lines on the road aren’t properly painted which adds to the concern and drivers simply ignore the stop sign.

“I did not see him at all. Only when we collided did I realise what had happened. With the impact my passenger side window broke and the glass cut my left ear,” Vos said.

Vos claims the other driver told him his breaks had failed but according to Vos, he did not even attempt to stop.

“There were no brake marks whatsoever nor any other evidence that he even tried to stop,” he said.

The Randfontein Herald attempted to contact the other driver involved in the crash, who is believed to have driven a company vehicle at the time of the incident. The Herald was, however, informed they will contact their broker to find out if commenting is ‘proper at this stage of an investigation’. No comment has been received at the time of print.

The Herald also asked the Rand West Local Municipality for comment regarding the stop signs in the area.

Spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa noted the inquiry will be forwarded to Public Safety but said at some point motorists are cautioned to be careful when driving.

No further comment has been received.
