Beloved owner of Fred’s Auto Repair Centre dies

The late Frederick Edwin Abbott leaves a lasting impression on the community of Randfontein.

Family and friends bid farewell to Frederick Edwin Abbott, better known as Freddy, at the age of 69.

Rentia Erasmus, Freddy’s daughter, said her dad passed away after a short sick bed on August 17.

“My dad was loved by many and well-known in Randfontein. We had a wonderful childhood, he was a great dad. I will treasure all the great memories I had with him.”

Freddy was born in Brakpan, before finishing high school he moved to Westonaria and completed matric at Hoërskool Jan Viljoen.

“His footprints are solidly imprinted in Randfontein. I’m sure the community will remember my dad for fishing and cricket. He was also the owner of Fred’s Auto Repair Centre, a well-known business in Randfontein.”

She said her dad had so many hobbies he could choose from.

“My dad accomplished so much and everything he tried, he was extremely passionate about.”

According to Rentia, her father was a drum player in a band and even released his own CDs. He was also a radio DJ for a while and performed at various pubs in town. Aside from being a sports fanatic, he had an adventurous nature. He competed in sidecar racing as well and obtained his pilot’s license for a small aircraft and skipper’s license. He was a member of the Randfontein Cricket Club for many years, but he was most known for his fishing, which had the biggest impact on the community. He even had a fishing clinic for aspiring fishermen.

“The list can go on and on. He was just amazing and lived his life to the fullest.”

She further noted it was her father’s wish to be cremated and not have a memorial service.

Freddy leaves behind his life partner Marie van der Walt, children, grandchildren, great-grandchild and sisters.

“Daddy, may you rest in peace. I love you.”
