Urged by maternal instinct — driving school owner

Driving school owner makes Women's Month special as she represents women in a male-driven industry.

It’s been 23 years since Seipati Maphunye, owner of a driving school, has been at the wheel of the business she adopted from her brother.

On Women’s Day, Seipati was among women who were pampered and spoilt by another driving school owner, Oageng OJ Tsoane at Lacoste Joint in Mohlakeng.

“I was truly inspired by Seipati,” said OJ.

While the industry is predominantly male-dominated, Seipati said she felt more than welcome by the male driving school owners.

“I found the men being more supportive than I thought. I am the only woman in our local industry as the majority of female owners are not willing to be at the forefront,” she expressed.

In the 20 years of business, she went the extra mile for the underprivileged by donating shoes to needy school learners in Mohlakeng and Brandvlei as well as giving free driving lessons to matric learners.

“I might be a business owner, but I’m urged on by my maternal instinct and passion for the needy and underprivileged. I was moved recently by one young man who told me that I once helped him at a time when he was indeed in real need of a pair of shoes,” she concluded.
