Pedestrian struck by bakkie in Homelake

A near-fatal pedestrian collision occurred at the infamous intersection in Homelake.

A pedestrian was injured after being hit by a bakkie at the infamous Homestead Avenue and Kenneth Road intersection on Tuesday afternoon, August 6.

The Randfontein Herald arrived on the scene and found the driver next to his vehicle while the pedestrian was lying on her stomach surrounded by bystanders.

While the driver requested not to be named, he said he was making his way across the intersection and claimed the traffic light was green. He then noticed the pedestrian, stepped on his brakes and tried to stop his vehicle but the tyres slid and he hit the pedestrian. The driver then apologised to the pedestrian.

Moreover, eyewitness Dallas Sithole stated the pedestrian was busy crossing the street when the driver rushed across the intersection, consequently hitting her.

The pedestrian being assisted.

“His concentration must have been on the road because he did not see her in time. He was speeding,” Sithole claims.

Another eyewitness, Maureen Kritzinger added she heard loud breaks before witnessing the pedestrian being flung onto the side of the road.

A private hospital’s emergency vehicle arrived on the scene and took the pedestrian to the hospital. The pedestrian sustained injuries but was able to move and speak.

The Herald has since approached the police for comment who could not confirm if any case is being investigated at this time. Their feedback will be published once received.
