Milestone elderly treated to a fun movie and treats

The Hillshaven Library partnered with Laerskool Modderfontein Primary School to treat elderly residents.

Hillshaven Moddies Library and Laerskool Modderfontein Primary School treated the residents of Milestone, a care centre for the elderly, in celebration of Mandela Month.

Library supervisor Lydia Anne van Aswegen stated the library and primary school partnered recently to give their 67 minutes to the elderly residents.

“Our media prefects of Modderfontein with Rand West City Libraries wanted to treat our elderly residents to give thanks to the legacy they left for our future generation,” Lydia claimed.

The media prefects are Zamazwide Nxumalo, Ntakadzeni Likhade, Rethabile Legoale, Thato Ngwenya, Mkhokhobi Mashego, Gopotso Maboyana and Bokang Natshabisa.

The prefects set up a movie day for the elderly residents at Milestone in Westonaria. That day the residents enjoyed watching The Bucket List while receiving a treat and cold drinks from the prefects.

“The attendees laughed and cried joyfully as they loved the movie day. They were so appreciative after one of the media prefects gave a heartfelt speech. The idea was to make the elderly residents smile, treat them for the day, and spread awareness of the importance of library programmes in the community. Libraries are more than just books,” Lydia expressed.

Lydia further explained libraries play an important role in the community. She stated there are currently 16 libraries in the Rand West with various services to provide. They continuously host programmes for multiple age groups to spread the love of literacy and unite communities.

“We work with many stakeholders to make these programmes successful, like Milestone and Laerskool Modderfontein Primary School. We would like to thank them for always dedicating their time and efforts to make sure our library programmes are a success,” she emphasised.

Lydia appealed to the public to support the nearest library and explore what they have to offer.

“Libraries are a haven for many and the only space where they can think, talk and plan freely. It is sometimes the only space for students to learn, for citizens to seek jobs, for all to explore the world of books,” she concluded.
