Firefighters to battle it out in Mossel Bay

The RandWest Fire Department needs your help to afford to compete at this year's Toughest Firefighter Alive Open Competition in Mossel Bay.

Sipho Mlangeni (39) and his team of firefighters are looking forward to the Toughest Firefighter Alive (TFA SA) Open Competition between September 25 and 27 in Mossel Bay.

However, they need the community’s help to compete and show they are indeed the bravest and toughest.

“Our team is a perfect fit to win this competition because we possess a unique combination of skills and abilities. Our members are well disciplined and we are also good at managing time. We do not take pain as punishment but rather use it as a way to motivate us,” team manager Sipho said.

Sipho decided to enter the competition after the team endured two months of strenuous training in the Vaal. He added that the team’s performance was excellent and the female team had finished the competition with a bronze medal.

“We now believe that we are mentally, emotionally and physically fit for any challenge.”

Sipho dreams of seeing his team emerge victorious, but more importantly, to see each member perform to their utmost potential while showcasing their skills, strength and teamwork.

“Of course, winning medals and trophies is encouraging. However, I strive to foster a sense of brotherhood and teamwork among my colleagues. Knowing that together we can overcome any obstacles with personal growth. I aim to help each team member to push beyond their limits, developing their physical and mental toughness,” Sipho stated.

The team tries its best to offer assistance to the community by keeping its firefighters fit and strong to protect the residents. Furthermore, Sipho also said that the team usually visits schools to educate learners on the importance of handling a fire.

Sipho has been a firefighter for more than 15 years now. According to him, it has always been his dream to work as one.

He has since furthered his studies and now carries an Advanced Diploma in Fire Technology while finishing his second year of Public Administration. He believes that, by the Grace of God, he will one day reach his goal of becoming the fire chief on the West Rand.

Even though Sipho is positive that the team will bring home the title of champions, he is concerned that they might have enough support to go to the competition. The team is appealing to all residents and businesses to sponsor them for their adventure to the championships.
