Let the blood flow for Mandela Day

A real estate agency in Randfontein commemorated Mandela Day by donating blood.

Palm Estates decided to spend their 67 minutes donating blood to those in need.

As the South African National Blood Services (SANBS) pitched a tent at Tambotie Mall, Frans le Grange and his team honoured Nelson Mandela by donating their blood on July 17.

The team was confronted by SANBS staff who gave them various questions to answer and after the team had to take a test to confirm their iron levels. Then they respectfully donated litres of blood to help those who were in need.

According to SANBS’ official website, less than one percent of South Africans are active blood donors. A unit of blood only lasts 42 days after donation and, for this reason, blood donors need to donate regularly. In addition, their daily goal is to obtain 3 000 units of blood to guarantee a sufficient and safe blood supply for the healthcare system.

Frans added that blood is the gift of life and to donate blood is a gesture of goodwill to fellow citizens. He further stated the staff of SANBS were exceptionally friendly and professional.

According to Palm Estates team member Melinda du Plessis, people across the globe unite for positive change on July 18 annually to commemorate Nelson Mandela’s birthday as a day of goodwill. She added Nelson Mandela International Day commemorates the lifetime of service Nelson Mandela gave to make South Africa a better place.

SANBS gifted their donors with blankets to give thanks.
