No better way to celebrate Mandela Day than the needy way

The Feed The Need Soup Kitchen is celebrating Mandela Day by giving warm food to the children of Toekomsrus.

The Feed The Need Soup Kitchen has once again ensured that the less fortunate of Toekomsrus sleep with full stomachs as part of Mandela Day celebrations.

On July 12, the organisation provided a full meal for the community’s children and others to celebrate the upcoming Mandela Day.

According to the founder Koekie Alie, the children received a warm meal to help them stay comfortable during the harsh winter days.

“There is no better way for the organisation to spend our 67 minutes,” Koekie said.

Koekie further explained that they usually offer warm food during winter, including a cup of soup, bread, fat cake, samp and beans, mince, curry, rice and salads.

A wheelchair-bound man makes his way to the soup kitchen.

“By the grace of God, I tried my best to cook a nice dish for the children. My mother taught me how to cook for the needy community. She had a big heart for the less fortunate. She always showed me how to take care of the people,” Koekie said.

Through this organisation, Koekie hopes to abolish substance and child abuse in Toekomsrus.

“The children who were screaming for food in the community motivated me to start the soup kitchen. Children used to come to my house asking for food. It is heartbreaking to see what our children in Toekomsrus have to go through,” she expressed.

Koekie has been feeding the needy since 2004. However, the Feed The Needy Soup Kitchen was established in 2019. The organisation will also be hosting another soup kitchen on Mandela Day, July 18.

“Help us to make Toekomsrus a better place for the children,” Koekie concluded.
