Multi Charity Randfontein extends a helping hand to the needy

A married couple tries to ease the burden of poverty in their community.

Multi Charity Randfontein is doing its part to support not only the children and elderly in need but also those who call on them for help.

Monica and Craige Lancellas, founders of the organisation, opened their doors about eight years ago. Monica mentioned she was diagnosed with anxiety and depression nine years ago and underwent pastoral counselling where she received the message that she needed to work with those in need.

“I am just the middleman, God is the provider,” said Monica.

After several years of working at a hospice, she felt ready to open her shop, which sells second-hand products such as clothing, books, and other random stuff. They then utilise the money to reach out to elderly homes and shelters, as well as to provide food parcels to families.

Their main focus is the care of children and the elderly who only receive a government pension. Monica explained with the number of people losing their jobs these days, they also help out families and individuals with food parcels.

“I go where the Spirit leads me. If someone comes into the shop, I try to help. We are not here to get rich, we are here to help each other,” she said.

Their only form of income is the shop and they would appreciate it if people or businesses in the community could lend a helping hand.

She added they also reach out to the homeless and give them bread, milk and soup. Further, they have a project where they sponsor two Grade One learners each year because children are very dear to their hearts.

Each December they have a project where they save all the R5 coins during the year and then use it for the community.

“People come in here as clients but become friends and then family.”

She noted they don’t have a list with names of people they help, they go where the need is.

“The part I look forward to the most is when I go to buy the food that will be distributed to those in need.”

Craige has become such an inspiration to those who visit the shop since having his leg amputated, Monica stated.

“He was helping out there even before he received his prosthetic and had to walk around with crutches.”
