Caring mothers reach out to the unemployed

Mohlakeng's Caring Mothers held a soup kitchen where the impoverished could fill their stomachs and pick clothes for the winter season.

Caring Mothers, an organisation in Mohlakeng extension 3 held the Souper Bowl of Caring where they offered soup and clothing to Mohlakeng residents as a means to help those struggling with unemployment.

On June 17 Caring Mothers members assembled at Mahlangu Park to feed and clothe the less fortunate.

According to organisation secretary Miriam Manyise, the organisation started the outreach when they realised that the community members were struggling with unemployment. She expressed that they, as mothers, felt they needed to fight against poverty.

“Our main target for this outreach was to help those who are jobless. The unemployment rate in South Africa is drastically high and people we know do not have a warm bed and a full stomach at night,” Miriam said.

Three large cauldrons were steaming with freshly made soup which was handed to hungry residents. Suits of clothes were sprawled over the field and the less fortunate were welcome to take whatever they would need for the winter season.

Miriam stated that it was not only residents who were welcomed, but plenty of individuals from outside the area also attended after seeing the outreach advertised on social media.

The members of the organisation pack out the clothes.

“This was our second event and we are hoping to do many more events in the future. Our next target will be collecting hygiene products for girls. We will also be continuing the soup kitchen to feed the community,” Miriam expressed.

The organisation has appealed to the public for any donations of clothing, sanitary pads and soup ingredients so that they can proceed with feeding and clothing the less fortunate. If you can make any donation, contact Miriam on 061 571 0466.
