SPCA provides tips after multiple monkey sightings

The SPCA has appealed to the community not to feed monkeys roaming the streets.

The Randfontein SPCA has recently been receiving multiple reports of monkey sightings in Randfontein.

According to inspector René van Straten, the SPCA does not capture the monkeys unless they are sick or injured. Thereafter, they relocate the monkeys to a vet or rehabilitation centre.

According to Van Straten, monkeys moving through the town is not an abnormal sight. She stated that monkeys live in habitats around town and therefore it is not uncommon to see a few swinging around.

Furthermore, Van Straten advised on what to do if a resident comes in contact with a monkey. If a person does come in contact with a monkey, Van Straten advises that they rather not feed it or leave food out to attract it. She also stated that children and pets must be kept away from the monkey.

“The monkeys never stay in one place. They will eventually move onto another location,” Van Straten said.

If you spot an injured or sick monkey you can contact the SPCA on 011 412 3114.
