Loyal car guard at Randgate SPAR dies age 42

After years of loyal service as a car guard at Randgate SPAR, the community bids farewell to Ismael Mogwera who passed away recently.

Ishmael Mogwera will always be remembered as a kind person, dear friend and loyal car guard.

The 42-year-old, who was a dedicated car guard at Randgate SPAR for 20 years, tragically died last month. He was well-known among members of the community.

His wife, Ruth Pakisho, explained to the Randfontein Herald that Ishmael went to bed on February 23 but did not wake up the next morning.

“I tried to wake him but he did not respond,” the shattered widow said.

“He was a great person who would always be there for others. He was caring and loving. I miss him every day. His dearest sport was soccer and his favourite team was Mamelodi Sundowns. He enjoyed being in the company of his friends, loved making jokes and was always smiling.”

He leaves behind Ruth, who is pregnant with their daughter, as well as a 12-year-old son.

Many who worked with Ishmael only had good things to say.

Koos Sibiya, who worked with him for 17 years said, “He was my brother, we worked well together.”

Robert Greef added, “He was a loving man, always friendly, considerate, and willing to help everyone. We worked together for 16 years.”

Resident and customer Graham Shippen said, “I come to SPAR a lot and I’ve known him for a long time. He was very friendly, kind, and helpful. He always worked very hard. I saw him the day before he passed. It was so sad to hear of his passing.”

Manager at Randgate SPAR Manny Jardim concluded by saying, “He was a good friend, always made jokes. He was consistently at work and willing to help all the time.”

A memorial was held for Ishmael in his hometown of Ventersdorp on March 2.
