Between January 1 to 23, RandWest SPCA manager René van Straten has been busy admitting 178 animals while their Westonaria branch admitted 47 animals. Some of the animals that were admitted included dogs, cats, tortoises, deer, and an owl.

The SPCA received a complaint about a duck that was being mistreated.
The SPCA received a complaint about this dog that was dumped.

Van Straten further claimed although it is common to admit multiple animals a day, this month was the most they have received in a long time. This is mostly a result of pet owners breeding irresponsibly and dogs walking the streets.

She stated that the amount of animals is exhausting the resources and taking a toll on the SPCA financially. Not only does it affect the staff financially, but emotionally as well. Van Straten said that the daily emergencies and constantly seeing abused animals are hurtful.

This tortoise was removed from a vendor attempting to sell it.
Another complaint about dogs being mistreated was laid and the SPCA investigated the matter.

At the moment the SPCA’s two bakkies are still in need of a service. One needs tyres, while the other needs a service since the breaks are problematic. The SPCA is in dire need of financial assistance due to its high petrol account, vet bills, and basic maintenance.

“Unfortunately, we only have so many kennels and space and little to no adoptions because it is easier to buy a puppy on Facebook. We have to face the harsh reality. If the public stops breeding and giving animals away to whoever they think are good owners, the numbers of animals that need help would not be so great,” Van Straten stated.
