Teine players wear tutus in support of the SPCA

The Randfontein Rugby Club wore tutus and shook cans to raise funds for the RandWest SPCA.

Members of the Randfontein Rugby Club along with RandWest SPCA committee members and volunteers took to the streets last month to raise funds for the animal welfare organisation.

Inspector and manager at the RandWest SPCA, René van Staten, said that the opportunity was held as a means to raise funds to cover their monthly costs.

Azile Gqolade, Marvin, Gwekwe, Itu Mpete, and Christoff Kleyn from the Randfontein Rugby Club then held cans and roamed the area of Greenhills and Homelake in tutus. Together with members of the SPCA, the rugby club members amused passersby to receive donations.

René added that the opportunity was a huge success since every donation goes a long way.

RandWest SPCA chairperson Brenda Eloff, SPCA committee member Candice Cloete, and volunteers during the fundraiser.

President of the club, Jannie van Loggerenberg added that the boerewors rolls sold on the day raised an amount of R2 000 while the can-shaking expedition raised a total of R1 700.

Director of the club, Hennie van Eck said although the day did have its challenges such as having enough volunteers to shake the cans considering many people were already on holiday, it turned out to be a great success indeed.

“I think the people of Randfontein do have soft hearts for the SPCA and it showed that day,” Hennie said.

Jannie concluded that the best part was to see the good spirit every member had as well as the willingness of the community to contribute.
