Walking for gender-based violence victims, survivors

The Philani Community Development Programme members organised a walk with various stakeholders to march against gender-based violence.

Residents from across Rand West City joined hands with South Deep Mine, the office of the Executive Mayor, the Department of Health, and many other stakeholders in a walk as part of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign.

The walk with a total distance of about 4km started at Four Square and proceeded towards Zuurbekom Intermediate School. Afterward, members walked to George Sacks in the Zuurbekom clinic’s direction. The members then turned towards the N12.

According to the programme manager at the Philani Community Development Centre, Refiloe Qabang, the aim was to show unity against the scourge of violence against women and children.

“The campaign aimed to achieve a gathering of attendees who created awareness against gender-based violence and show support for victims and survivors. The organisers focused on challenging cultures and practices that motivate gender inequality. This walk encouraged members to report abuse and to act supportively towards those suffering from gender-based violence. The campaign also educated members to teach the youth about the importance of gender equality and to steer clear of harmful behaviours and habits such as substance abuse.

“Other than the event being part of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign, the community members were encouraged to live a healthy lifestyle. Services such as testing for HIV, high blood pressure, diabetes, and sexually transmitted infections were also provided by Philan and the Sisonke Health insurance agency,” Refiloe said.

Refiloe added that the community has been organising annual community walks since 2021.
