Health inspectors show no mercy in Rand West City

Businesses handling food on their premises have been warned that regular health inspections will be conducted following a shocking discovery at a major retailer.

Municipal Health Services (MHS) and the West Rand District Municipality (WRDM) have sent a stern warning to retailers, restaurants, supermarkets, warehouses and even hawkers regarding food handling, preparation, storage and food safety.

Food parcels were found lying on the floor.

This after officials conducted health inspections and launched their Food Blitz Operation at various food premises in the Randfontein and Toekomsrus areas recently. Among the big-name health inspectors involved were Health and Social Development councillor Antoinette Shikoane, Public Safety councillor RT Molusi and Health and Social Development West Rand City Local Municipality councillor Una Dickson. Police were also involved during the blitz operation.

Police were also involved in the operation.

At one major retailer in the area, inspectors discovered food packages lying on the floor and meat products which were left open and uncovered which poses a health risk to consumers. The community has since expressed their concern on media platforms, stating that the famous retailer should be closed. Many members of the public, however, thanked inspectors and complimented their efforts.
