Looking forward to life after defeating breast cancer

Resident of Westonaria and cancer survivor says one can still live a beautiful life despite the battle.

Westonaria resident Granny Tlhako (42) who was diagnosed with breast cancer in February this year, is a living testament that cancer is a disease that can be defeated.

These are but some of the inspirational sentiments Granny echoed during an interview with the Randfontein Herald at Lenmed Randfontein Private Hospital.

Granny is a wife and mother of three aged 17, 12 and seven. She initially found out she had breast cancer in February. At the time, it was in Stage 3. She recently finished her last round of radiation and is proud to say that she is cancer-free and looking forward to the rest of her life.

“This thing [breast cancer] started as a small but painful pimple in my breast. I decided to have it checked out and after some tests were done, it was found that I had breast cancer. Although hearing this was hard, I knew I had to quickly snap out of it [the pain] and give myself a fighting chance. I did exactly that,” said Granny.

She added that she was able to do this by staying strong, having a positive mindset and being resilient.

“It kept me calm throughout the experience and made me fight even harder, not only for myself but my husband and three children. The journey I’ve walked thus far has truly been difficult and I wouldn’t be where I am today had it not been for God, my husband and our children. I’ve stayed true to my promise that I will fight hard to beat this and I did.

“I just recently finished radiation and I am free of cancer. Although I have been placed on medication, I am glad that everything went well,” said Granny, who added that she is the first person in her family lineage to have been diagnosed with cancer.

Asked what advice to give those who have been diagnosed with cancer, Granny said it is very important for people to always keep a positive mindset and a fighting spirit.
