Carroll Shaw joins gardeners to sell organic produce for community

The Carroll Shaw Memorial Centre joined many other farmers from around the country in selling organic produce on Shoprite and Checkers' Market Day.

Gardeners from more than 30 other community food gardens joined farmers from the Carroll Shaw Memorial Centre in Randfontein to sell organically grown produce directly to the public. The harvests were sold as part of Shoprite and Checkers’ Market Day held on October 12.

Following Market Day’s launch in 2017, retailers committed to strengthening local communities by offering small-scale food gardens the opportunity to sell their fresh produce at selected Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets.

“We’re always excited about participating in Market Day because Checkers’ footprint enables us to sell to a larger audience. Not only do we gain invaluable retail experience, but the response from the public is always fantastic and we’re able to supplement our income,” said Mpho Mutaung of the Carroll Shaw Memorial Centre.

The Shoprite group is dedicated to providing food security and ensuring that there is access to sufficient and nutritious produce. More than 220 food gardens are supported, covering more than 4.5 million square metres and over 3 750 home gardens. The Shoprite group impacts 61 064 beneficiaries and the retailer’s garden programme has provided 2 580 community members with training over the past year. The programme has supplied more than 1 million meals since inception.

The farmers who participated in the Market Day came from all over South Africa. Gauteng had six farmers who participated and the Carroll Shaw Memorial Centre in Randfontein participated at Checkers in Tambotie Mall.
