Municipality explains power issue in Mohlakeng

The municipality said that this was aimed at encouraging individuals to purchase electricity instead of bypassing it.

Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) has decided to unpack the issue of illegal electricity disconnections in Mohlakeng and said that municipal workers were not cutting off the electricity supply but rather eradicating the bypassing of the electricity system.

This comes after hundreds of people from the township took to the streets on October 4 to express their frustrations after having their electricity disconnected.

During this time, residents tried blocking entry points with burning tyres.

The municipality’s spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa said these actions are aimed at ensuring that people purchase the electricity that they utilise.

“The municipality was not cutting off the power supply but rather eradicating the bypass so that everyone may purchase electricity. Once the bypass is eradicated, those who haven’t bought electricity will inevitably face a power loss. We strive to ensure that everyone has access to a reliable and sustainable power supply by encouraging individuals to purchase electricity instead of bypassing it. To ensure the residents have access to electricity, it would be necessary for them to purchase it,” Montshiwa said.

He added that their actions were necessary to prevent electrical accidents and ensure that electrical systems are functioning properly.

“Bypassing electricity can lead to serious safety hazards, such as electric shocks, fires, and even explosions. Our team is committed to resolving the bypassing issue to ensure that everyone in the community can enjoy a reliable and uninterrupted power supply,” concluded Montshiwa.
