Municipality cuts off illegal power connections in Mohlakeng

It is believed that the operation started at the Mohlakeng hostel, where they were chased away by residents of that particular area.

Hundreds of people are protesting in various locations of Mohlakeng as municipal workers flood the region to disconnect illegal electrical connections.

This is according to information received, which suggests that authorities from the Rand West City Local Municipality’s electrical department are cutting off the connections and taking away electrical cables.

Municipal workers from the electrical department were spotted disconnecting illegal electricity connections in different parts of Mohlakeng.

It is believed that the operation started at the Mohlakeng hostel, where they were chased away by residents of that particular area.

They then retreated and moved to Ext 5 where they were confronted by angry residents who tried to block entry points with burning tyres.

This was on Ralerata Street and Kabelo Street among other famous intersections in the township.

Community members spoke to the Herald and said that the Red Ants were on standby in the area, to deal with any possible eventualities. Photo submitted.

Just recently, the municipality carried out a similar operation in Simunye, where they disconnected illegal electricity connections to the many households in the area.

The Randfontein Herald will be tracking the story and will keep readers updated.
