Five Keready mobile clinics will ensure that young people in the West Rand District now have access to the health services they need.
Mobile health clinics are set up in under-resourced areas that have large youthful populations to offer health checks, to screen, and test for a variety of conditions, such as sexually transmitted infections, blood pressure, diabetes, and HIV, and also give treatment. In addition, these units are also available for young people to ask any questions they have about their bodies, periods, pregnancy and family planning. #Keready, a movement dedicated to improving healthcare access and healthcare-seeking behaviour among young people, is on a mission to ensure that young people are equipped with the knowledge and resources they need to look after their health. By taking advantage of these mobile health clinics, and the WhatsApp line, youth are empowered to take charge of their health and make informed decisions.
#Keready’s team consists of 10 young doctors, 95 nurses, a team of communicators and drivers, and over 100 mobilisers who ensure that young people in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KZN and the Western Cape have access to the health services they need from 46 mobile clinics.
Driving this youth-focused healthcare agenda are the Keready doctors who, themselves are youth. They understand the importance of engaging with other young people on their own terms in a language and manner they understand, especially important when it comes to talking about health. Through unconventional marketing campaigns, such as TikTok challenges, podcasts, and WhatsApp messages, and through their health teams that visit schools and community centres, Keready has seen a significant increase in weekly health checks among young people.
“We offer health services tailored to the needs of young people, which helps break barriers and ensure that their voices are heard,” said Dr Tutula Singata, the young doctor responsible for the West Rand District.
