Local learner has a bag full of dreams

Writing is what makes this local Grade 12 learner tick, she describes herself as a modern Anne Frank.

Hoƫrskool Riebeeckrand learner Nathaniƫl Wangra is a young girl with big dreams and has the talent to match. Her determination and drive to make them come true shows in her writing.

The Grade 12 learner is a force to be reckoned with and has a passion for writing, poetry, mental health awareness activism and leadership.

As if that’s not enough on her plate, she is also a top 10 learner at school and has demonstrated academic excellence while excelling in extracurricular activities.

“As a young writer, poet, and mental health awareness activist, as well as a youth leader and public speaker, I have accomplished several notable achievements.

“These include writing a group public speaking speech on feminism, which earned our school a diamond award and I strongly believe that words and ideas can change the world, I am constantly inspired to write more and inspire others.

“I also had the privilege to participate in an open mic writing event and book launch with Diana Ferris [South African writer and storyteller]. I had the opportunity to read and present one of my poems and had the chance to meet other inspiring authors. This experience deepened my connection to writing and reinforced my commitment to my craft.

“My passion for women’s empowerment and ambition also extends to encouraging young females to be the best versions of themselves. I am committed to showing young women that they can be smart, ambitious, and creative and that they can achieve anything they set their minds to,” said NathaniĆ«l.

She added that apart from her literary activities, she also finds balance by participating in cultural, sports, and competition activities.

Some of her achievements include coming out in second place for culture activities at the school competition and obtaining first place in an Afrikaans poetry competition.

She has also acted in and directed her own drama script. Recently she wrote and directed her first group drama script, which achieved a platinum certificate at RACA.

“I am deeply grateful to Freddie Welkom, the school principal Annelize van den Berg, and to my mother Netley Wangra, who provided support and assistance throughout my journey.

“Juggling the demands of matric, cultural activities, and other competitions can be challenging, but I have learned to manage my time, practice discipline, and persevere to achieve my goals. Currently, I am writing a novel that I hope will be adapted into a book. I am excited about what the future holds and am eager to seize every opportunity with open arms.

“In recognition of my accomplishments, I have won several diamond certificates for all the work that I have directed and acted in with RACA. I am delighted to have recently earned a platinum certificate for my first drama group performance. Ultimately, I see myself as the 21st century Anne Frank ā€“ a small girl with big dreams and the courage to achieve them,” she said.
