High water usage causing water levels to plummet

The municipality received a notice from Rand Water, warning that there is an extremely high demand for water at their Eikenhof system.

Residents from different parts of Randfontein and its surroundings are urged to use potable water sparingly, as high consumption may lead to a shortage of water.

This is word from Rand West City Local Municipality spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa who said that they received a notice from Rand Water, warning that there is an extremely high demand of water at their Eikenhof system.

“The consumption rate of the customer meters on the Eikenhof system has been increasing significantly and this means that the water supply pressures are low and many high-lying areas are experiencing little to no water supply.

“All Rand Water primary and secondary stations are operating at their maximum capacity as guided by the Raw Water abstraction license.

“Consumers using water in this system are putting a strain on the system, causing the reservoir levels to plummet,” said Montshiwa.

He added that even if people are using water sparingly, they may still be affected by this shortage and that high consumption of potable water may result in the collapse of the system, leading to intermittent water supply.
