Simunye man faces animal cruelty charges

The pig was kept in a community piggery where it was being neglected and not fed.

The Rand West SPCA is doing its bit in fighting cases of animal cruelty in different communities. They just opened a case of animal cruelty involving an emaciated pig found in a community piggery in Simunye.

This was last month and comes after the place was inspected by RandWest SPCA Inspector Rene van Straaten alongside her colleagues.

The RandWest SPCA has opened a case of animal cruelty against one of the owners of a community piggery in Simunye for starving his pig. Photo submitted.

Speaking to the Randfontein Herald in an interview, Van Straaten said their mandate is to ensure animal welfare in and around their region.

“The place is a community piggery and we have been working alongside the Randfontein State Veterinarians and the owners of the pigs to ensure their welfare. However, one of the owners failed to provide proper care for his pigs and as a result, the emaciated pig had to be euthanised immediately, as it was still alive upon inspection.

“After humanly ending its suffering, the inspector removed the carcass to conduct a postmortem to establish why the pig was in such a horrible condition and it was confirmed that the pig was indeed starved,” said Van Straaten.

She added that they are now constantly monitoring the conditions of the remaining pigs with assistance from the State Veterinarians and the Rand West City Local Municipality health department.
