Gauteng police aware of alleged assault incident involving top cop

Gauteng Police are aware of a video making the rounds on social media of an alleged assault incident involving the West Rand District Police Commissioner.

West Rand District Police Commissioner, Major-General Fred Kekana, has been caught on camera allegedly assaulting a civilian guarding a gated community.

This was on September 4 in Ext 10 in Westonaria and it is believed that the community member who was at the gate had prevented Kekana from entering.

It was during this time that an altercation ensued between the two and led to Kekana and his associate allegedly assaulting the man who was stationed at the gate while attempting to arrest him. The incident was caught on camera and the person taking the video can be heard saying ‘umbophela into engekho. Umbophela ukuthi ukumisile?’ translating to ‘there is no reason for arresting him. You are arresting him because he stopped you?’

The person taking the video can also be heard accusing the officers of abusing their power.

The Randfontein Herald approached the provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, who said the incident had been brought to their knowledge.

“Provincial management of police in Gauteng is aware of the video that is trending on social media depicting two officers allegedly assaulting a suspect who seems to be resisting an arrest. According to a report, Kekana was visiting a member residing in an estate when he was denied entrance through a makeshift boom gate to the estate by an alleged ‘security officer’.

“During this time, the security officer reportedly insulted the senior officer who was dressed in full uniform which resulted in an altercation. The security officer was not co-operating with officers and it was later established that the person was not a qualified security officer. Following the altercation, two perpetrators have since been arrested on charges of attempted robbery, assault, malicious damage to property, and crimen injuria. They appeared at the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court on September 6. The case is remanded to September 29 and both suspects were released on a bail of R1 000 each,” said Nevhuhulwi.
