2024 school year: Close to 100 000 Gr 1s and 8s placed so far
A total of 61 180 Grade Ones and 38 674 Grade Eight learners have so far been placed for the 2024 academic year according to the Gauteng Department of Education's latest online admissions placement progress report.
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) confirmed that close to 100 000 grade ones and eight have been placed in schools in the province.
According to GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona, a total of 61 180 grade ones and 38 674 grade eight learners have been placed as of September 4. He also reminded parents to accept placement offers within seven school days.
“As of September 4 this year, applicants with complete applications [verified proof of residence] will begin receiving offers of placement. A total of 228 027 parents received placement messages and of these 99 854 accepted placement offers as final from one of the schools applied to. Another 1 662 accepted placement offers while awaiting further offers while a substantial total of 126 511 parents have not responded to placement offers,” said Mabona.
He added, “We remind parents to accept placement offers within seven school days. Offers not accepted within seven schools will be auto-placed at the school with a placement offer closest to the parent’s home address.”
Mabona reiterated that parents are also reminded that the applicants are ranked for placement according to the admissions criteria in the following order up to the capacity of each school:
• Home address within the school feeder zone closest to the school
• Siblings in grades 1–7 or 8–11 only
• Previous school in the feeder zone of the school applied to
• As placement offers are received, schools reach capacity and applicants who do not accept an offer in time are transferred to schools with available space
Mabona said when all applicants in the above categories are placed, placement offers will be released to applicants in the following categories in the order outlined below up to the capacity of each school with available space:
• Work address within the school feeder zone
• Home address within 30km
• Home address beyond 30km
• Parents with incomplete applications (no documents or no valid proof of residence) will only be able to select a school with available space from December this year
